Doll Face

I was watching "The Man Who Cried" and there was this shot of Christina Ricci at the end with that cold lighting that I found very inspiring. I took a few screen shots and used photoshop to help figure out some base color combos in oil and painted this. I've always loved this type of heart shaped, doll like face. I messed with her face proportion a bit and she actually looks a bit like Lily Cole now.

Long Time No Figure Drawing

I really missed figure drawing, luckily I found this small art gallery in Los Gatos that organize it once a week. $16 + tips, a bit expensive but I think it's worth it. It's quite close to my house and it's a very pleasant and short drive to get there. And the folks there were surprisingly friendly, I thought I was back in canada for awhile.

Last hike of the summer

We hiked this trail three weeks ago after stuffing ourselves with dim sum, it was one of the last few sunny weekends before the rain. After the hike we checked out a near by archery ranch which rekindled my desire to be an Elf again. I'm be a dim sum-eating Elf.

Happiness is playing piano... well, for some

My brother never liked piano practice, neither did I. But I do now.

Some drawings this week

The view from my kitchen window. I'm still learning to draw light and shadow.

The pest control people made this half a wood box to cover up an entrance to the house's crawl space in the yard. I decorated it.

Garden Pot

Last time after paint the fruit in my garden, not only the garden didn't make it in, it looked like I painted indoors... So I'm putting "trying to paint light" as my next goal. This painting at least have some light and shadows, but somehow it still looked like indoor light! hehehe, hmm.

Keep going I guess.

Bunny at work

Bunny gives all the fishes a regular spray of water.

Sometimes bigger ones would come by too.

Bunny also gives it a spray, since it seems to like it.

Bye bye come again!

Long time no fruit

I haven't done fruit in a long time, and I wasn't going to do fruit today at first but I was looking for simple shapes to paint against my lovely new garden, but then the fruits' so big the garden didn't make it in after all, haha. That's ok, the melon at the back was going bad and I have to eat it tonight and garden will still be there tomorrow anyway so it works out. Haven't painted in awhile cause I was busy moving to my new house. I look forward to paint more outdoor in my garden from now on.

Lloyd

I had a chance to visit my friend Lloyd last week, I haven't seen him since we sat together at DoubleFine three and a half years ago. Lloyd hasn't changed much, still got the sexy legs and shorts. I was too excited when drawing his award winning legendary legs and I screwed up the portions a bit, damn.

8 Dollars a Jar

I felt my oil practice need to start from scratch, so I'm gonna concentrate on doing some simple geometries.

This is a trusty brand of tomato sauce that I buy from WholeFoods. It wasn't my first choice in the beginning cause I was loyal to another brand that they stopped carrying one day and with a sigh I realized that anything and everything in life eventually will be obsolete so I might as will give other brands a try. Now I switched to this brand and I couldn't even remember what my previous favourite was. What a cold blooded heartless consumer I am!

I heard the other day that 'blogs' are very old school now, that nobody haves blogs anymore. I guess as we get older I have to get used to things I consider as current being laughed at by the next generation. My Kindle is already outdated, I don't use a smart phone, and the west coast swing steps I learned are considered old and not taught anymore.... and I'm late for the Early Bird special at Denny's!

Oil Practice

Ola everybody, hi mom,

This week's oil practice turns out a bit blocky for some reason. I think I'm bit bored of greenery now, might try something not green next time.

Birds study

Last weekend my blog friend Wren and I painted together for the first time at Lake Merritt in Oakland. It was a very nice day and there were tons lof birds of all kinds all around us. I picked up some tips and tricks of using watercolor from him and it was very useful, and generally just be in the same zone of another great artist really makes painting outdoors a very enjoyable experience. It also helps that neither of us seems like serial killers so we might very well get together again some time. :-)

Oil Practice

More oil practice, still getting used to the idea that painting is wet all the time.

Bunny's Mini-Cloud

Bunny ran into a mini-cloud hanging out in the corridor.

Bunny watched the mini-cloud play.

Wondering if mini-cloud wants to play together.

But mini-cloud floated away as soon as bunny showed up!

Oil practice

I finally bought some oil equipment this weekend, cause there was a 20% off coupon from Blick, which made the price of things slightly more acceptable than a trip to WholeFoods. I only got the bare essentials, six colors, two brushes, a canvas pad, a small can of turpenoid natural, and some small canvas panels. I was going to get disposable palettes but decided to get paper plates from safeway instead. I did my first practice at home from my trip photo so I can work out some kinks in the procedure. But then realized that it's much more comfortable doing this at home than painting outdoors ever will be. I have everything packed in the to-go bag like my watercolors but it might still require a herculean effort to drag my ass outdoors.

RoadTripPost6

My friend made me play with clay, I made the bunny and he made the mushrooms, and we did I tonal study of it in oil. At least that what I thought we did, I sort of stumbled through the whole thing and I only remembered that I was told over and over again not to hold my paint brush too close to the front tip. I had a lot of fun though, it was really nice painting with a friend. I would like to have more painting friends.

The last restaurant we ate at in Forks. While my husband was paying the check at the cashier, the waitress was eying my husband in a smoldering and flirty way, I was surprised but very intrigued. I pulled my hat down, stepped back a little in silence, and observed her. It was very interested watching another woman looking at him, but he finished signing and headed out, completely unaware of it (probably the only thing he was aware of at the time was his full stomach and tight belt). Still, I was a little proud that my man got checked out.

RoadTripPost5

Bella Italia! It's supposedly where Bella and Edward had their first date, but of course that was shot somewhere else. I was all set on having Mushroom Ravioli, I imagined that dish comes with rosy fantasies with romantic hopes and dreams, but then I overheard a mom next table asking her little girl "don't you want mushroom ravioli? It's what Bella had!" A sense of shame took over me and I went for Cioppino cause it seemed like a more grown up choice for someone whose rosy dreams were deeply buried under husband's sweaty laundry.

A small river near Cape Flattery.

RoadTripPost4

This is oil, I was coerced into using oil by my friend for the first time in years, but I'm contemplating buying myself an oil set now. I used to think it's extremely troublesome but not anymore, I can just the essentials and it'll still be travel-able. It's like when you're locked out of your apartment and your phone was out of power and you were forced to ring one of your neighbors door bell who has long scars and missing teeth and looked like he's done some serious time, you saw that he was in the middle of knitting a baby hat and there's cookie baking smell wafting out of his door. The world is friendly and welcoming after all.

The Veela Cafe in Port Angeles where we spent an hour waiting to be hungry so we can go eat at Bella Italia ~ But I think this Veela reference is from Harry Potter. Vamps and Wizards references everywhere, this is my town!

The Fork's Coffee shop again, one of the most saddening thing in the world is when realizing we were too late for pancakes.

RoadTripPost3

Port Angeles.

Twilight burger joint. The posters were kind of faded and curled up at the corners. But I still would go there just because the posters exist; it's like a black widow's web for helpless insects.

No twilight memorabilia on the wall of this one. It was a very odd bar, it looked like it's made of three rooms: normal bar, band stage+dart floor+dance hall, and a junky's bedroom with a dirty mattress in the corner. We had hot wings and nachos (life expectancy -1) in the dance hall and stared at the junky mattress and the bar's bathroom while we ate.

I have grown quite fond of this little room. It's been awhile that I have my own bed so every night I rearrange the sheets to the way I like it and read Breaking Dawn till I fall asleep.

RoadTripPost2

Fine, I'll confess I'm a Twilight Fan. The first drawing on top was Jacob's house (Scream!!!) And for this trip I stayed six days in Forks and bought some very expensive Twilight memorabilia. (I'm Team Bella if you're wondering.)
